Other techniques to minimize spam include adding a captcha (a program that requires manual entry of a confirmation code, which prevents software programs from auto-posting). You can also ban repeat spam or comment troll offenders by IP address and ban specific words as well.
  • Write blog posts in a way that engages customers. Encourage commentary by adding an open-ended question to your blog posts in addition to your call to action, for example.
  • Don’t just expect the visitors to talk amongst themselves. Participate in the discussions, too. This will show you’re interested in what people have to say and will encourage further communication.

    Good to see your writing again :) About the spam comments: these things almost killed my blog a few years ago. I can’t agree more with you on “Moderation”. Perhaps, it’s a good Idea to invest in Akismet’s anti-spam key?

    Sure, there will be cons in that system, but there’s always a backup plan, is there? As you’ve mentioned, comment moderation is one of the solutions. Another one would be adding another wall of defense with that in anti-spam engines.

    Askimet can definitely something that can cut down on the spam and is a huge timesaver for me. I keep an eye on that spam folder as once in a while it’ll snag something that’s a valid comment.
